BRENT DRAGON ADDS MILK BOWL TO HIS RESUME
by
Mike Twist
Vermont Driver Has Now Swept
All of The Big ACT Events |
|
When
Brent Dragon woke up on Sunday morning, he already owned a pretty darn
impressive resume in ACT Late Model competition. Among his victories
have been some of the biggest races on the tour.
“We won the Memorial Day Classic here [at Thunder Road Speedbowl in
Barre, Vermont] earlier this year,” explained Dragon. “I won the
Labor Day Classic a couple years ago. We’ve won the Spring Green
and the Fall Foliage [at New York’s Airborne Speedway].”
But there was one race that Dragon had not won and it was the Crown
Jewel of the schedule – The Milk Bowl at Thunder Road. Brent’s
father Beaver and uncle Bobby had both won the race, but bad luck
had plagued Brent just about every year there.
That was until this year. On Sunday, Dragon added the one feather
to his hat that wasn’t already there. After years of trying, he
finally won the Milk Bowl.
“We’ve won the Milk Bowl,” said Dragon. “We’ve won our five big
races [on the schedule] and I’ve completed it now. If I didn’t race
another day, I wouldn’t care.
“Everything fell into place today. When it’s going to be your day,
it’s going to be your day. Today was our day.”

BRENT WINS THE MILK BOWL!
FULFILLS 20 YEAR DREAM
with MILK BOWL VICTORY! |
ACT
RACE REPORT: Second generation American Canadian Tour (ACT)
driver Brent Dragon had to wait an extra week to fulfill a life-long
dream when the 34th annual Milk Bowl was rained out on October 1.
Sunday, Dragon won the final race of the 2006 season, the prestigious
New England Dodge Dealers event at Barre, Vermont’s Thunder Road Int’l
Speedbowl. After starting on the outside pole of the first segment, he
strung together finishes of second, 12th and third for the lowest total
(17) of the 30 starters. The victory, worth more than $10,000 was the
largest of his career.
“I’ve been chasing this for almost 20 years,” the Milton, VT racer
stated. “Last year I finished second (to Patrick Laperle). It was the
most upsetting week of my life. I was leading but lost with seven laps
to go when Patrick passed another car. It’s really incredible that next
year, I’ll be able to part of the pre-race ceremonies with my dad and
the other former Milk Bowl Champions,” he added. The elder Dragon
(Beaver) won the Milk Bowl in 1978.
Due to its unique format, the Milk Bowl is known as the toughest short
track stock car race in the country. The event consists of three
segments with the finishing order from the first 50-lapper inverted to
set the starting line-up of the second. An inversion of the second
segment finish lines up the starting order for the third. The winner of
the race is determined by adding together the three finishing positions
of each driver. The lowest total earns the victory.
Second went to Williamstown, Vermont’s Cris Michaud, the 2004 Milk Bowl
winner. Michaud, who is also a multi-time Late Model champion at the
high-banked, quarter-mile oval scored 22 points (12+5+5). Seventeen
year-old sophomore racing sensation, Joey Polewarczyk of Hudson, NH was
third in the final tally. Polewarczyk started on the pole after setting
a new Thunder Road Late Model track record one week ago. He was the
first of three drivers to turn in a sub-13 second lap. His total was 24
points (1+14+9).
Scott Payea from Milton, VT (27 points) was fourth and Shelburne, VT
racer, Jamie Fisher celebrated his 33rd birthday with a fifth place
performance (29 points).
Following the critical second segment, Dragon held a one-point advantage
over the youngster, “I knew the battle for the win was going to be
close. Joey (Polewarczyk) is a great kid and I enjoy racing with him. We
have a lot of young talent racing each week, it lets the older guys,
like me, know the future of the Tour is strong.”
Runner-up Michaud, was thrilled for the winner, “Brent’s been chasing
this a long time. Having already won a Milk Bowl, I know what it’s like
to be hungry for a victory in this race – it’s the one everyone wants to
win because of the history. Plus, the list of past champions is a real
‘who’s who’ of racing in our region. And, after all, how many race
winners get to kiss a cow?” he finished.
In spite of his youth, the pole sitter handled the pressure well, “It’s
been a great week, I spent most of that time baffled that I had broken
the track record and would be starting on the pole for the Milk Bowl,”
Polewarczyk commented. “To finish third in this race is special, I’m
happy for Brent (Dragon), he’s wanted this one for a long time.”
As Dragon was greeted by his crew and father he added, “I’ve finally won
the one race that’s always haunted me, it’s a great feeling!” His next
order of business was to give the trophy queen a requisite kiss, “She’s
beautiful,” he enthused, “I’d love to take her for a spin around the
track!” |
|

|
10/1: Brent
will sit on the outside pole for the Milk Bowl which was moved to Sunday Oct. 8th due to
rain the previous Sunday.
Brent earned the outside
pole and a $500 bonus with a lap time of 12.956 seconds around the high banked,
quarter-mile oval.
Joey Polewarczyk in the #97 ran a 12.935 for the top spot.
Brent
commented to ACT PR: Joey
(Polewarczyk) is a great driver. He began racing with us last season and Ive seen a
lot of growth in him since then. Its really neat to be starting alongside someone
who is less than half my age! The veteran racer continued, Im excited
for the first segment. I started on the outside of Eric Williams in the Mekkelsen RV
Memorial Day Classic in May and won, so if history repeats itself Ill be kissing the
cow on Sunday. |

Pre-Race
ACT PR:
Brent Dragon, Milton, VT - 2004 Labor Day Classic Champion - I love Thunder Road,
that wasnt always the case though. I used to dread coming here, but Ive
matured as a driver and my crew has always worked really hard at giving me cars I can win
with here at Thunder Road.
Tonight (August 24) my car is really fast so Im looking for big things come the 200.
I won the Labor Day race in 2004 and Id love to win it again. I consider the Bond
Auto Labor Day race to be one of the big 5 races in ACT history. (Milk Bowl, Memorial Day,
Fall Foliage, Labor Day and the Spring Green). When I won the event it only paid like
$1,000. The next year Jean wins it and its a $10,000 purse! Id love to win the
ten-grand and add my name to that list one more time.
Theres a lot of strategy that plays into racing in Barre and the 200 laps will
definitely be hard on a lot of the drivers who arent used to the long distance
races.
Its pretty neat to look at the list of previous winners and see my father and uncle
and know that Im a part of the history of the Bond Auto Labor Day Classic.
There are a lot of young guys who have a good shot at winning this race, especially Ryan
Vanasse, hes a great racer and his program has improved this season. |

Seekonk Speedway,
Seekonk, MA - Sat. August 5th |
SEEKONK SPEEDWAY RACE REPORT:
Lancaster, NH’s Roger Brown retook the lead from Dave Pembroke on
a lap 29 restart and held off a strong challenge from defending race
winner Brent Dragon in the final 10 laps to win the visiting
American-Canadian Tour’s Bay State 100. Thirty Late Model competitors
from seven states turned out to vie for a piece of the $22,000 purse,
with Brown and Pembroke starting the main from the front row. The pair
battled side by side through the first quarter of the event with Brown
leading the first half-dozen circuits before Pembroke took over. A minor
incident on lap 29 brought out the second of six cautions and allowed
Brown to restart alongside the leader.
Brown and
Dragon took first and second when racing resumed and, at the
halfway point, were trailed by Phil Scott, Pembroke, former Seekonk
regular Ryan Vanasse, Jamie Fisher, Joey Laquerre, Seekonk veteran Ray
Parent, Ben Rowe, and A. J. Begin.
Five-time ACT champion Jean-Paul Cyr started 19th after winning the B
main, but was mired back in traffic for much of the event. The series
point leader didn’t crack the top 10 until lap 83, and spun around while
battling for eighth with Begin with just 9 laps remaining. Brown and
Dragon raced wheel to wheel for several laps until incidental contact
shuffled the challenger back to fourth with five laps to go. Phil Scott
made a final charge at the lead but was unable to prevent Brown from
earning his second career ACT victory.
Scott, Pembroke, and Dragon finished second through fourth, followed by
Vanasse and Parent, who bested Laquerre for sixth after a spirited
side-by-side battle that lasted twenty-plus laps. Ben Rowe, Mark
Lamberton, and A. J. Begin rounded out the top ten. |

DRAGON FINISHES STRONG at OXFORD
Brent Dragon wasnt a factor in much of the race at Oxford, but came on strong at the
end. He drove his #55 Dodge under the radar screen to a solid fourth place finish.
It was a good day, said Dragon. We had a better car. If we could have
restarted on the outside for that last restart, it would have been all that we needed. But
we took what we got and it turned out pretty well for us. I saw a couple of cars get
turned around there at the end. It was pretty hard racing there in those top 8-10 cars.
It started to get better in the end. My car usually does that, it gets better in the
end. You put yourself in a position though where you are 8th or 10th and youve got
to battle so hard with 15 laps to go. Thats never good. Weve got to pick the
pace up a little bit earlier in the race. |

DRAGON CLAIMS
42ND MEMORIAL DAY CLASSIC
Sunday, May 28 2006
Contributed by: ACT Staff
Brent Dragon of Milton, VT made an unexpected visit to Barre, Vermonts Thunder Road
International Speedbowl Sunday for the 42nd annual Mekkensen RV Memorial Classic and did
not leave disappointed. The second-generation racer dominated the 100-lap feature race
after starting on the front row next to pole-sitter Eric Williams. Williams, from Hyde
Park, VT finished second with Waterbury Center, Vermonts Chad Wheeler in third.
Completing the top five were Roger Brown from Lancaster, NH and Mooers Forks, NY driver
Mark Lamberton.
The lapped traffic today was critical to the outcome of the race, winner
Dragon stated in Victory Lane, Plus, he continued, Were not used
to running in this kind of heat its been a cool Spring. Well cherish
this win, theres so much history to this race - the list of winners reads like a
`whos who. Dragon as well as several other competitors with the
American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model series took advantage of a scheduled weekend off
by heading to Thunder Road's high banks in preparation of a pair of $10,000 to win ACTion
Super Series events at the track later in the season. The 40 year-old driver is the second
Dragon is the second Dragon generation to win the Memorial Day Classic his Uncle
Bobby (Dragon) carried the checkers in 1969. Veteran racer Williams had earned the pole starting
position following the qualifying heats, which saw 34 Late Models attempt to make the
starting grid. Dragon got the jump at the drop of the initial green flag and never looked
back and went on to capture a victory that had eluded his father, the legendary Beaver
Dragon.
Williams fell in behind the leader and the pair pulled away from the rest of the 28-car
starting field. Wheeler, who had started sixth, quickly got to work and moved into third
by the fifth circuit. Former Thunder Road Late Model Champion, Phil Scott from Middlesex,
and past ACT Tour title-holder, Morrisvilles Pete Fecteau, along with Wheeler,
hopped on the Dragon/Williams train and the group started to pull away from the field.
The front-runners set a torrid pace in the 80-plus degree weather. By the 23rd circuit,
Dragon had caught the back of the field. The first car to go a lap down was defending
Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic winner, Trampas Demers from So. Burlington. Other
competitors soon fell like targets in a shooting arcade as first 63 laps ran non-stop
allowing Dragon and the lead pack to continue their march.
Brent drove a great race, runner-up Williams stated. After about five to
ten laps under the green he was the better driver with the better car. It was a great day
and a great race.
Third place Wheeler added, If we had gone green all the way I might have had
something for Eric (Williams), but not for Brent.

managed to squeeze the heats in between the rain at Lee

will return to Lee on September
17th to finish the twin bill with the TrueValue Mods.
Brent started towards the tail of his heat and was running hard trying to move up.
Brent went around exiting turn three, was hit by a couple of cars and wound up backed into
the inside guardrail. A couple of trips to the pits for some tape and bungee cords to hold
the tail in place and the #55 was back running - helped by some prolonged yellows where
the cars kept running to dry the track after short rain showers. With only two laps left
in the heat, there was no chance to move into the top six, so Brent will be in a conci
when ACT returns to Lee. |

race report:
Ste-Croix, Qc Veteran Quebec stock car driver, Donald Theetge of
Boischatel, Qc scored his first career American- Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model win
Saturday night at the 5/8ths mile Circuit Ste-Croix, his home track. Sylvain Lacombe of
Terrebonne, Qc was second and Milton, Vermonts
Brent Dragon was third. A pair of Vermont drivers, Dave Pembroke of
Montpelier, and Miltons Jean-Paul Cyr rounded out the top five.A pack of some ten cars include Dragon, Cyr, Pembroke, Hoar,
Claude Leclerc, Andre Beaudoin, and Mark Lamberton diced back and forth for position
before the checkered flag fell. Martin Lacombe settled for sixth followed by Brown, and
Mooers Forks, NY driver Lamberton. Phil Scott, who recovered from his second lap off-track
incident raced to ninth and Leclerc, a 60+ year-old racing veteran from Lanoraie, Qc
rounded out the top ten.
Race winner Theetge, a regular competitor with the Quebec-based Série Castrol, was one of
eight Quebec competitors who attempted to qualify for the ACT Late Model Tours
Banlieu Ford 100. This race was a good tune-up for the $10,000 to win Mega Classique
at Sanair in July, Theetge said in victory lane. The ACT and Série Castrol
cars matched up pretty well. Both Tours have a lot of good drivers and I think the fans
will see a very exciting feature race as well as qualifying.
Runner-up Lacombe, winner of a 2002 ACT Tour race at Ste-Croix and third-place Dragon
agreed. Sanair is one of my favorite tracks and I cant wait until we return
there July 8-9, added Dragon. |

ACT MAKES AN ADJUSTMENT
WATERBURY, VT -- The
American-Canadian Tour (ACT) announced today (Wed, March 29), a change to the 2006 ACT
Late Model Tour schedule. The race at Quebecs 5/8ths mile Circuit Ste-Croix (Ste-Croix, Qc) has been moved to
Saturday, May 13 from its original June 17
date.
The change at Ste-Croix was made in the interest of balancing the 2006 schedule and
preparing for the $10,000 to win Mega Classique at Sanair on July 8-9,
stated Tom Curley, ACT president. The ACT teams will now have a little breathing
room during the month of June, the 2004 Racing Promoter of the year added.
I like the change, commented Brent Dragon,
winner of the last ACT Tour race held at Ste-Croix. I had been a little nervous
about running three weeks in a row before having a week off to prepare for ACTs
return to Sanair. We would have gotten all of the maintenance done but having a week off
will allow the team to pace themselves, he finished.
ACT was last at the picturesque track in 2003. Other active competitors whove
carried the checkers at the fast, high banked oval include five-time ACT Tour Champion
Jean-Paul Cyr (1996) and Quebecs Sylvain Lacombe.
The Saturday, May 13 Ste-Croix 100, will have a post time of 5:00 PM. |

2006 SEASON ENTRIES FILED
FOR ACT'S LATE MODEL TOUR |
Thursday, March 16 2006
Contributed by: ACT Staff
Thirty drivers have filed 2006 season entries for the American-Canadian Tour's 12-race
Late Model series. The competitors will visit eight different tracks ranging in size from
a one quarter-mile to nearly a mile. The Tour's most southern stop will be at the
one-third mile Seekonk Speedway, a slightly banked but very round oval in Seekonk, MA,
while the northern-most venue is in St-Croix, Quebec near Quebec City. The 5/8th mile
Circuit Ste-Croix is a high-banked track with fast, long straight-aways. At either end of
the straights are two tight, very different corners, which will present unique challenges
to the competitors.
Fred LaGoy of Morrisonville, NY was the first to file a season-long entry for the Tour.
The veteran racer opted to come out of semi-retirement after seeing the 2006 ACT schedule.
Since then, Late Model racers representing all six New England states as well as New York
and the Canadian province of Quebec have served notice they will race with ACT in 2006.
Many are returning veterans such as five-time and defending champion, Jean-Paul Cyr, second generation racer Brent Dragon, 1992 title holder Dave Whitcomb, 2005 runner-up Dave
Pembroke, and the ageless Joey Laquerre, to name a few. The young guns are represented by
such notables as Roger Brown, Jamie Fisher, Patrick Laperle, Joey Becker and Scott Payea,
among others.
Newcomers to the dance include Maine's Steve Reny, Bobby Baillargeon and Mike Collins from
New Hampshire as well as Walter Sutcliffe from Connecticut.
The 2006 ACT Late Model Tour kicks off on Sat/Sun, April 29/20 at Thunder Road Int'l
Speedbowl, Barre, VT with the eighth annual Merchants Bank 150. Cyr is the only driver in
the previous seven events to repeat in the annual lid-lifter. Dave Pembroke from
Montpelier is the defending race winner. Thunder Road will host two additional ACT Tour
shows, both part of the $10,000 to-win ACTion Super Series, the Bond Auto Labor Day
